Kritinia castle

Near the area of Kamiros Skala and near the village of Kritinia, stands the imposing fortress of Kritinia. Located two kilometres northwest of the village  and fifty five kilometres from the city of Rhodes, the castle is built on a hill and has panoramic sea views. Initially, the settlement was coastal (Kamiros Skala in current position), but in the post-Byzantine years it was extended more to the side of the mountains, for more saftety from  pirates. The ancient settlement eventually sank. The settlement was created by Cretan refugees, from which came the name meaning “New Crete”. It is a mixture of Byzantine and Medieval styles and it is known as Kastellos.Inside there are the remains of the Catholic Church of St. Paul as well as newer buildings since the castle was used during the Italian occupation as a Dockyard.The idyllic region of Kritinia, surrounding the castle, is known to date, for its various events and the hospitality of its inhabitants, as the place of cultural promotion, tradition, history, keeping alive a village hidden in the beauties of nature, the slopes and forests offering a unique and unprecedented view of the nearby islands that can be seen across the vast blue sea.
