Rhodes aquarium

In the northern part of the island of Rhodes, in the area of Niochori and next to the Elli beach, overlooking the deep blue waters of the sea, stands the imposing building of the Acquarium. It is the First Hydro-biological Station of Rhodes and it belongs to the National Centre for Sea Research. In the specifically built reservoirs, which are full of sea water, visitors (200,000  a year) visitors can admire the sea life walking  on stone catacombs. The  marine species include Anthozoa, mollusks gastropods and cephalopods, crustaceans, Echinoderms, Fish Families of  Dasyatidae, Muraenidae, Serranidae, Mullidae, Sparidae, Centrachantidae, Labridae, Scaridae, Siganidae, Mugilidae, Scorpaenidae, Triglidae, Balistidae, Monacanthidae, as well as sea turtles. In the Museum there are exhibits such as Invertebrates, sharks and other fish species, sea turtles and monk seals Odontokiti and Mediterranean seals. The research infrastructure has the Y.S.R. and the scientific support of HCMR conducts research programmes covering all aspects of Oceanography in the area of the Dodecanese. In this way it works as a model research unit in the Mediterranean.
